COMSOL Implementation of Valet-Fert Model for CPP GMR devices

T. Xu[1], C.K.A. Mewes[1], S. Gupta[2], and W.H. Butler[1]
[1]Department of Physics and Astronomy and Center for Materials for Information Technology, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA
[2]Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and Center for Materials for Information Technology, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA

The Giant Magneto Resistance (GMR) effect is a quantum mechanical effect which can be observed in systems consisting of thin alternating ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic layers. Simulation using COMSOL allows the evaluation of the magneto-resistance ratio and the electrical resistances of realistic CPP-GMR devices and opens the possibility to study new device materials and designs.

Computation of Space-Time Patterns via ALE Methods

V. Thümmler1, and A. Weddemann2
1Department of Mathematics, Bielefeld University, Bielefeld, Germany
2Department of Physics, Bielefeld University, Bielefeld, Germany

Partial differential equations which exhibit solutions that are spatial temporal patterns are often found in biological and chemical systems, e.g. when describing pattern formation in reaction-diffusion systems.Special classes of such patterns are relative equilibria and relative periodic orbits, which are solutions that in an appropriately co-moving frame of reference are stationary and ...

Development of an Interlinked Curriculum Component Module for Microchemical Process Systems Components Using COMSOL Multiphysics

A. Mokal, and P. Mills

Department of Chemical and Natural Gas Engineering, Texas A&M University, Kingsville, TX, USA

COMSOL Multiphysics provides a powerful numerical platform where various models for microchemical process technology components can be readily created for both education and research. This modeling tool allows chemical engineering students to focus on understanding the effects of various microchemical system component design and operational parameters versus coding and debugging of the numerical ...

Comparison between COMSOL and RFSP-IST for a 2-D Benchmark Problem

G. Gomes
Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada

RFSP-IST (Reactor Fueling Simulation Program) is a computer code used for the full-core neutronics design and analysis of CANDU® reactors. RFSP-IST calculates the static flux and power distributions in the core by solving the neutron diffusion equation in two energy groups. For validation purposes, results from RFSP-IST are often compared with those from other codes. This paper documents the ...

Photon Migration Through Multiple Layers of Biological Tissue

M.S. Yeoman[1], E. Sultan[2]
[1]Continuum Blue, Tredomen, Ystrad Mynach, United Kingdom
[2]College of Technological Studies, PAAET, Adailiyah, Kuwait

The modeling of light propagation through multiple layers of biological tissue are assessed & compared to the theoretical predictions by Perelman at al. [94 & 95] of the most-favorable-path (MFP). The MFP on which photons will be found can be obtained from the path of the net flux propagation using the diffusion equation. The diffusion equation is valid when studying diffuse light propagation, ...

Bone Remodeling Following Total Hip Replacement: Short Stem Versus Long Stem Implants

M.S. Yeoman[1], A. Cizinauskas[1], C. Lowry[2], G. Vincent[3], S. Collins[3], D. Simpson[3]
[1]Continuum Blue, Tredomen, Ystrad Mynach, United Kingdom
[2]Corin Group, Cirencester, United Kingdom
[3]Imoprhics, Manchester, United Kingdom

Bone resorption around hip stems, in particular periprosthetic bone loss, is a common observation post-operatively. A number of factors influence the amount of bone loss over time and the mechanical environment following total hip replacement (THR) is important. Conventional long stem prostheses have been shown to transfer loads distally, resulting in bone loss of the proximal femur. More ...

Electromagnetic Well Logs Simulated with the COMSOL® RF Module on a Cluster

D. Swaminathan[1], G. Minerbo[1], K. Pathak[1]
[1]Drilling and Production Group, Schlumberger, Houston, TX, USA

Introduction Computer simulations are widely used for the interpretation and inversion of electromagnetic measurements in well logging. Until recently, simulated logs have been computed with approximate 1D or 2D models. By using the COMSOL® RF Module installed on a cluster, we show that a full 3D finite-element simulated log can be obtained within an acceptable turnaround time. Use of ...

Skeletal Reduction of Boundary Value Problems over Thin Solids

Suresh, K.
University of Wisconsin – Madison

Boundary value problems posed over thin solids are amenable to a dimensional reduction in that one or more spatial variables may be eliminated from the governing equation, resulting in significant computational gains with minimal loss in accuracy. Extant dimensional reduction techniques unfortunately rely on representing the solid as a hypothetical mid-surface plus a possibly varying thickness. ...

Optimum Design of Dual-modality Sensing Electrode Array

W. Huaxiang, W. Jing, H. Li, and J. Weiwei
School of Electrical Engineering & Automation, Tianjin University, Tianjin, Taiwan

Sensing electrodes array model of 3-Dimensional ERT/ ECT dual modality is established by using the software COMSOL. According to the uniformity of sensitivity field distribution, the correlation coefficient and the reconstructed image space resolution, the ECT/ERT dual modality sensing electrode arrays are optimized. Experimental results show that the optimized sensing electrode array of the ...
