Modeling of a 3D Inductor

Inductors are used in many applications for low pass filtering or for impedance matching of predominantly capacitive loads. They are used in a wide frequency range from near static up to several MHz. An inductor usually has a magnetic core to increase the inductance, while keeping its size small. The magnetic core also reduces the electromagnetic interference with other devices as the magnetic ...

Electrostatically Actuated Cantilever

The elastic cantilever beam is one of the elementary structures used in MEMS designs. This model shows the bending of a cantilever beam under an applied electrostatic load. The model solves the deformation of the beam under an applied voltage.

Evaporative Cooling of Water

This tutorial shows how to couple three physics interfaces to model evaporative cooling. The effects need to be taken into account are heat transfer, transport of water vapor and fluid flow. User-defined expressions are used to implement the source term for the water vapor and evaporative heat source, as well as the moist air feature to accurately describe the material properties.

Stresses and Strains in a Wrench

This tutorial demonstrates how to set up a simple static structural analysis. The analysis is exemplified on a combination wrench during the application of torque on a bolt. Despite its simplicity, and the fact that very few engineers would run a structural analysis before trying to turn a bolt, the example provides an excellent example of structural analysis in COMSOL Multiphysics.

Capacitive Pressure Sensor

A capacitive pressure sensor is simulated. This model shows how to simulate the response of the pressure sensor to an applied pressure, and also how to analyze the effects of packing induced stresses on the sensor performance.

Computing Capacitance

A capacitor, in its simplest form, is a two terminal electrical device that stores electric energy when a voltage difference is applied across the terminals. The stored electric energy is proportional to the applied voltage squared and is quantified by the capacitance of the device. This model introduces a model of a simple capacitor, the electric field and device capacitance are solved for under ...

Phase Change

This example demonstrates how to model a phase change and predict its impact on a heat transfer analysis. When a material changes phase, for instance from solid to liquid, energy is added to the solid. Instead of creating a temperature rise, the energy alters the material’s molecular structure. Equations for the latent heat of phase changes appear in many texts but their implementation is ...

Convection Cooling of Circuit Boards - 3D Natural Convection

The suite of models examine the air cooling of circuit boards populated with multiple integrated circuits (ICs), which act as heat sources. Two possible cooling scenarios are depicted: vertically aligned boards using natural convection, and horizontal boards with forced convection (fan cooling). In this case, contributions caused by the induced (forced) flow of air dominate the cooling. To ...

Solar Panel in Periodic Flow

The coupling of fluid flow and structural mechanics is a challenging problem for several reasons. The fluid flow problem usually requires a specific kind of mesh that is not appropriate for structural mechanics. Additionally, one may want to include geometric features in the structural model that are not significant for the fluid flow model. This model computes the structural stresses and ...

Airflow over an Ahmed Body

The Ahmed body represents a simplified, ground vehicle geometry of a bluff body type. Its shape is simple enough to allow for accurate flow simulation but retains some important practical features relevant to automobile bodies. This model describes how to calculate the turbulent flow field around a simple car-like geometry using the Turbulent Flow, k-epsilon interface. Detailed instructions ...
