Membrane Filtration Modeling in COMSOL Multiphysics®
Membrane filtration has a wide range of applications for either filtering away unwanted matter, e.g. for water treatment purposes, or to concentrate a desired product by removing excess fluid.
In this webinar we will look at a few examples of how membrane filtration can be simulated in COMSOL Multiphysics® such as:
- Cross-flow filtration
- Dialysis and electrodialysis
- Ceramic water filters with activated carbon
We will also discuss fouling effects and examples of gas filtration systems with soot build-up as well as air filtration systems such as an electrostatic precipitator.
The models will all have different process or design parameters affecting their performance such as operating pressure or flow rate, membrane permeability, membrane area and product/contaminant concentration. It will therefore also be shown examples of how to share these models with colleagues or customers who then, without any simulation experience, can evaluate how different process parameters performs in the model.

Hilde Larsson joined COMSOL as an applications engineer in 2017. She has a PhD in the CFD modeling of bioreactors from the Technical University of Denmark and an MSc (Eng) in engineering biology from Linköping University.
