This introductory demonstration will show you the fundamental workflow of the COMSOL Multiphysics® modeling environment. We will cover all of the key modeling steps, including geometry creation, setting up physics, meshing, solving, and postprocessing.

Coffee Break

The Application Builder enables you to build specialized applications from your models in COMSOL Multiphysics®. In this 15-minute demo, we will highlight the basic steps to create an application as well as features in advanced, ready-made applications.


Leakage Current in Electrostatics: A Contradiction in Terms

Contrary to what its name suggests, the topic of electrostatics encompasses changing electrical fields. When dielectrics are involved, even the smallest leakage currents accumulate into enough charge to have major impact on the field distribution. Jeroen van Duivenbode reveals a surprisingly large number of leakage current effects and gives examples of associated COMSOL Multiphysics® models.

In this presentation, you will learn about various projects at DEMCON where we used COMSOL Multiphysics®, including a coffee dispenser test setup, slurry density meter, magnetic shielding design, heater module for a pulsed laser deposition machine, and production facility for medical isotopes.

Structural Mechanics and Acoustics Minicourse

This minicourse will cover the rich physics involved in structural analysis and acoustics as well as the interactions between them. Interactive examples include transducers, speakers, microphones, SAW filters, smartphones, medical sensors, and many others. We will discuss the range of material models (linear and nonlinear) you can choose from; loading and support conditions; and linking between solids, shells, plates, and beams.


Learn to use gradient-based and derivative-free optimization techniques to define and solve problems in shape, parameter, and topology optimization. The techniques shown are applicable for almost all types of models.

Modeling Tolerances in Electric Motors

For all types of simulations, COMSOL Multiphysics® uses a description of the geometry that is, arguably, idealized. Flat surfaces are 100% flat, materials are perfectly uniform, and collections of objects that are nominally identical indeed have no statistical variance at all.

Sometimes, the absence of tolerances merely leads to a small overestimation of some calculated parameter. In this presentation, we will discuss an example of a simulation outcome that shows a qualitative difference: The frequency spectrum of vibrations produced by electric motors shows additional peaks. Some theoretical and practical methods for including random numbers in COMSOL® simulations are discussed.

COMSOL Speakers

Ruud Börger

Ruud Börger is an account manager at COMSOL Benelux. Before joining COMSOL in 2010, he earned an MS degree in physics and started his career at Philips. He has extensive knowledge on fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and electromagnetics.

Paul Salden

Paul Salden joined the COMSOL Benelux office in 2018, where he works as an applications engineer. He received an MSc degree in aerospace engineering from TU Delft, specializing in structural mechanics. Before joining COMSOL, Paul worked as a data analysis consultant.

Sander Bezuijen

Sander Bezuijen is an applications engineer at COMSOL, where he specializes in fluid dynamics. Before joining COMSOL in 2017, he studied mechanical engineering at Delft University of Technology.
