We will review the major news for version 5.3a of the COMSOL® software, for both core functionality such as geometry, mesh, and postprocessing features as well as various physics-specific updates.
New features include the ability to copy and paste physics interfaces and components between different models, improved model methods, the addition of shape memory alloys, a new boundary element method for acoustics and magnetostatics modeling, new features for model reduction, and more.
Evolution Toward Simulation-Driven Design at ASML and How COMSOL® Contributes
ASML is continuously challenged by the microchip manufacturers to develop lithography machines to support their road map. As a result, current developments at ASML have to meet functional requirements that are expressed in subnanometer accuracy while, at the same time, the time to market has to be reduced and quality should be superior. In addition, the physical problems to be understood and solved become more and more complex and involve multiphysics. Computer-aided engineering (CAE) has become an indispensable tool for an efficient and effective development process. Although the COMSOL Multiphysics® software is only one of the many CAE tools within ASML, it is recognized as the preferred simulation tool in specific areas. It will be shown how CAE is used in general and how COMSOL Multiphysics® is currently used.

Magnetic System Optimization with COMSOL Multiphysics®
Finite element analysis (FEA) is playing an increasingly important role at the Goudsmit Magnetics Group in the development of its products and those of its customers. For these FEA calculations, Goudsmit uses the COMSOL Multiphysics® software. Various applications of this FEA tool are discussed that are encountered by Goudsmit in its daily operations. This talk provides an idea of both the diversity of magnet applications and the way COMSOL Multiphysics® is used for the analysis and development of the corresponding systems. The applications that are discussed include one where magnetism computations (Maxwell’s equations) are combined with flow computations (CFD) and particle tracing to obtain an estimate of the separation efficiency of a magnet filter used in, for example, the food industry.

Evaluation of Mixing of Sewage Sludge Digestion Tanks
For reasons of sustainability and to reduce operational cost, sewage sludge is digested. To maximize the biogas production, a certain pretreatment is applied. This technique is relatively new in the Netherlands and some problems occurred after implementation. The Water Board asked Tauw to investigate the mixing problems and to find a solution. We evaluated several types of mixers within the project and came up with a solution.
