COMSOL Conference 2015 Pune Award Winners

November 17, 2015

For the first time, the COMSOL Conference made a stop in Pune for a two-day simulation event. Attendees came from all over India to present work in a wide range of applications. The conference saw over 100 user presentations in the form of posters and oral sessions. Let’s review the award-winning papers and posters from the COMSOL Conference 2015 Pune.

The COMSOL Conference 2015 Pune Best Paper and Best Poster Awards

The Best Paper and Best Poster awards were announced during a general session on the second day of the COMSOL Conference 2015 Pune. The judges had a tough task of choosing from many interesting research presentations. Let’s meet this year’s winners.

Best Poster

The Best Poster Award went to Dr. Alok Paul from the Central Electrochemical Research Institute, Chennai for his poster titled “Charge-Discharge Studies of Lithium Iron Phosphate Batteries“. Paul and his research team studied the charge-discharge rates in lithium iron phosphate batteries. Battery performance generally depends on several parameters, and varying these parameters improves cell performance.

The team optimized some of the parameters of a lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery model and validated results with experimental charge-discharge curves. The presentation focused on the development of thermal and capacity fading models, as well as analytics for products with lithium-ion battery components. For the purpose of the study, Paul and the research team developed a model of a lithium-ion battery based on the Battery Design Module in COMSOL Multiphysics. During the presentation, he explained how he simulated a lithium-ion single cell at different temperatures using the 1D Isothermal Lithium-Ion Battery tutorial.

Best Paper

The Best Paper Award was presented to David Neihguk from Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, Chennai for “Effect of Length and Porosity on the Acoustic Performance of Concentric Tube Resonators“. Neihguk and his research team focused on the acoustic performance of short concentric tube resonators (CTR), which were analyzed in terms of length and porosity. Acoustically short CTRs, which are used in automotive exhaust noise control systems, have certain practical difficulties. Neihguk and his team studied these complications, which have led to automotive trends that are fuel efficient, such as downsized engines with increased power-to-weight ratios. The team found that 1D tools were limited in their ability to analyze compact acoustic mufflers and CTRs.

Popular Choice Poster

At the end of first day of the conference, poster presenters got to showcase their work to fellow attendees during a poster session. The highlight of the session was when attendees got to play the role of a judge by voting for their favorite posters.

Sai Pavan from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad was presented with the popular choice poster award for his research team’s poster, titled “Design of FIDT for 3D Analysis of MEMS Based Gas Sensor Using SAW Technology“. The team’s research focused on the analysis of resultant characteristics in a focused IDT design of a 3D MEMS-based SAW gas sensor when subject to mass loading. The team used the Acoustics and MEMS modules in COMSOL Multiphysics.
